January 2012

The Head Teacher's Comment

Welcome back to the New Year, you will see from the following articles that we had a wonderful Certificate evening in January to celebrate the achievement of our senior students. We were honoured to have Dr. Anne Bamford, the Director of Education for the Southwark Diocese, to present the awards.

So far it has already been a busy term. Many year 11 students had great success in passing their GCSE Maths exam 6 months early: Well done to all those students. This exemplifies the school’s aim to encourage and promote a high level of achievement among our students.
A very successful 6th form taster day was held last week. This gives our year 11 students a chance to experience at first hand a day in our 6th form, helping them to make sensible choices for next year.

This week and next we welcome the Year 5 students from our partner primary schools. They will spend a day with us, enjoying lessons and finding out about secondary school. At the end of each day I will accompany the students back to their primary school to hold an assembly with them and their parents. You are most welcome to join me, contact your primary school for dates and times.

Finally I’d like to invite you to our ‘Fiesta’ night on Saturday 4th February at 7:30pm.  This is another of our fantastic events put on by our PTA. I would take this opportunity to thank all our PTA members, whether they are from Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Crowborough or other areas, for their tremendous commitment to our school.

Luke Wright Poetry Afternoon

On 8th December the poet Luke Wright visited St Gregory’s to perform and teach students with a poetry afternoon. All Year 11 and Year 12 English students enjoyed his fast paced ‘stand up’ performance of poetry and stories. After the performance Year 12 students analysed some of Luke’s poetry and other Poets work, such as John Cooper Clarke, and even had a go at writing their own in a workshop run by Luke.

Luke is a poet and broadcaster. Luke broadcasts his own show on Saturday mornings on BBC Radio 4. Every year he produces a new poetry stage show and tours it across the UK and even to far-flung places such as Australia and China. His current show just completed a sold out run at The Edinburgh Fringe.

The students were completely bowled over by Luke’s performance and made comments such as “I didn’t know that poetry could be such fun and so cool!” and “I really enjoyed the work shop, I learnt such a lot from Luke. I didn’t realise that poetry was so involved and complicated until Luke taught us how to analyse and break it down.”

Both year groups thoroughly enjoyed their time with Luke, a really inspirational visit, full of energy and enthusiasm, and hopefully one to be repeated.

Certificate Evening

On Thursday 5th January, past and present students of St. Gregory’s joined with their parents, staff, governors, Dr Anne Bamford, Cllr. Elizabeth Thomas and Ms Olivier to celebrate their achievements in the examinations of Summer 2011.

The Speaker for the evening was Dr Anne Bamford, Director of Education, Archdiocese of Southwark School’s Commission. Anne has been recognised nationally and internationally for her research in arts, education, emerging literacies and visual communication. She is an expert in the international dimension of education and through her research, she has pursued issues of innovation, social impact and equity and diversity.

Anne advised students on the 10 most important things they will need when they leave school –
Business Acumen – think about how to use your skills,
Communication, write less & talk more – in life talking is important.
Team Work
Making strong friendships
Negotiation
Persuasion
Problem Solving – can be shown in different ways, big or small.
Organisation – Companies will look for this.
Motivation – Do the best you can possibly do.
Confidence – Be the very best person you can be.
And an extra point – ‘Think about what Spirituality means to you’.

Sarah Cameron, Head Girl and Edward Gill, Head Boy, gave a vote of thanks to Dr Bamford, and told her how they had developed and grown as learners at St. Gregory’s.

The Canterbury Christ Church University Secondary School Prize Scheme Award was presented to Matthew Miles, for greatest progress in KS4.  The Rosemary Olivier Award was presented to Hannah Wylie, for progress in Sixth Form.

Advent Charity Challenge

CC collected toys for the Mayor’s Toy Charity
Appeal. The bags of toys were taken to
The Big Yellow Storage Area just before
Christmas so that the toys could be given out
to children on Christmas Day.

CPD's Advent Charity Challenge was to fill decorated shoe boxes with gifts for the homeless and elderly in our local community and give them out via ‘The Soup Bowl Appeal’. Stampede in St. John's Road provided the shoeboxes.Tess Negri who runs the Soup Bowl Appeal was invited into school to talk to CPD students in assembly.

Each CPD Review Group then collected lots of presents to put in the shoeboxes. Some put a handmade card/ message in their shoebox and all were gift wrapped. The collecting of presents and wrapping of gifts was organised within each review group by CPD Lead Students.

ESU collected £251.76 to donate to The Bridge Trust. Review groups took part in various money raising events ranging from Cake sales to leg waxing & throwing wet sponges at Review Tutors.

NE review groups collected stationary to send to
schools in Kenya.

EPD collected £250.28 for FISCH  (Future for
IringaStreet Children). Each review group came
up with their own fund raising ideas and the EPD
staff bravely dressed up for the day and taught
all their lessons in fancy dress!

Plea for Bedding

A group of our local churches have got together to form a “Tunbridge Wells churches’ Winter Shelter”.  The idea is that on a rota system, churches are going to run a 10-bed dry shelter aimed at men and women over 18 years old who are currently homeless and rough sleeping in the Tunbridge Wells locality.    Graham Syms, a retired member of our Technology teaching staff, is very involved with this project.

The group are looking for donations of suitable bedding:  old pillow cases, pillows, sheets, single duvet covers and single duvets.

If you have any donations of bedding or want to know more about this project contact:  twcws.office@gmail.com

Plea for Lego

St Matthew’s Primary School, High Brooms, needs Lego urgently for lunchtime club activities to keep the pupils busy!

If anyone has any they would like to donate,
St Matthew’s will happily collect or drop it in directly - contact Heather Thunström tel: 01892 528098 or email: headspa@st-matthews.kent.sch.uk
