Engineering
Statement of Intent
At St Gregory’s, the Technology curriculum provides every student with the opportunity to apply the design process to real world scenarios. The GCSE Engineering course compliments and extends the students’ ability to solve practical problems and to develop fine motor skills.
Throughout KS3, students learn the safe use of a wide range of equipment. The Engineering course further enhances this knowledge with a strong emphasis on developing practical skills with hand tools and machinery and applying the appropriate safety precautions.
Students will experience different technical drawing styles that strengthen three-dimensional reasoning and teach an appreciation of industrial standards.
Computer aided design and Computer aided manufacture feature in the course and support employability.
The practical application of the design process is an essential part of the course. This requires a good understanding of the working properties of materials and processes and this is applied to the needs of the user as it evolves through the design, making and manufacture of a quality product. Students will develop transferrable skills including hand eye coordination and effective control of tools and equipment.
By the end of the GCSE Engineering course, students will have studied materials, industrial processes and scales and the diversity of manufacturing. They will have completed a substantial practical project in which they will design and manufacture an engineering product. Our Engineering students will show potential for future employment in this field.
