St Gregory's U17s Crowned Champions of the NYC Cup Super Elite Division 2025!

What a phenomenal week for St Gregory’s at the New York City Cup 2025! The NYC Cup has grown into a world-renowned event over the last decade, attracting only the very best teams from across the globe with elite squads travelling in from over 24 U.S. states, Canadian provinces, and far-flung regions like France, Dubai, the UK and the Caribbean. Taking place from Friday 11 July to Sunday 13 July, our St Gregory's boys rose to the occasion, successfully bringing home the Super Elite U17 title in unforgettable fashion!

From the first whistle, both our U16 and U17 teams showed what it means to wear our crest – playing with heart, unity, and an unbreakable team spirit that left the coaching staff bursting with pride. The road to glory was anything but easy, with both teams facing a gruelling schedule that saw them play two full 11-a-side matches in a single day.

U16s Report

For the U16s, it was a weekend of heart, grit, and resilience. Playing against some of the strongest teams in the region, they represented St Gregory's Catholic School with pride, unity and undeniable fight. Despite a 1-0 loss in their first game, the effort, work rate, and composure on display of the team set the tone for the weekend.

Later that afternoon, they went on to face a battle-hardened South Bronx United side known for their physicality and relentless energy. The match started evenly before a freak deflection off a shoulder saw the team go behind, but the boys dug deep. Although the match ended 2-1, the fighting spirit shown was nothing short of inspirational.

On Day two, with heavy legs and nursing injuries from two games in one day, the boys stepped onto the pitch for their final group game against a strong upstate New York team. St Gregory's dominated the first half but found themselves trailing once again. After equalising with a stunning looping header, the team delivered the moment of the match, burying the winner into the far corner. The roar that followed said it all, and the win was nothing more than the boys deserved.

The U16s closed the tournament with a win, and although they didn’t advance, our boys stood tall, learned, and gave everything in very hot and humid conditions. They should be incredibly proud of themselves!

U17s Report

The U17s kicked off their campaign with a statement win, sweeping aside Logan Soccer Club from New Jersey with a commanding 7-0 victory. Day two saw a match against the highly competitive CSMHM Club Soccer Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve from Montreal. The boys were relentless once again, cruising to a 5-0 win.

Heading into the final day, the squad was carrying knocks, bruises, and more than a few blisters. In their third group match, the boys dug deep to edge out New York City team NY HOTA Bavarian Soccer Club 1-0 in an intense, physical battle. A win which took them through to the final!

The final game saw St Gregory’s playing Tridents FC from Zambia. Despite going 1-0 down in the ninth minute, the St Gregory’s boys pressed on and won a crucial penalty just before halftime. Throughout the second half, they continued to defend bravely. Then, with just five minutes left on the clock, the team rifled the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-1 St Gregory’s.

The final moments were a defensive masterclass from St Gregory’s and when the final whistle blew, the team collapsed to the ground exhausted but overjoyed with their win. It was a triumph of teamwork, resilience and pride, and together they embodied what it means to strive for greatness.

To say we are proud of these young men is an understatement! They have proven that no challenge is too big when you stand together.

Well done, champions! St Gregory’s – New York City Cup Super-Elite 2025 Winners!
