Eco-Schools
Tue 30 Nov 2021Two of our Teachers Mr Dann and Mr Sammons have been appointed as Eco-School Coordinators for St Gregory's.
The ten Eco-School topics are:
Biodiversity
Energy
Global citizenship
Healthy living
Litter
Marine
School grounds
Transport
Waste
Water
To achieve the Eco-School mark they need to find at least three links and display evidence, ideally using student work, around school. They both feel they should comfortably achieve both criteria. You’ll hear more updates as they establish the student committee and tick off the other seven steps to achieving the Eco-School mark. For more information click the link.

A Christmas Carol
Mon 29 Nov 2021On Friday we had the The Quantum Theatre Company visit our school to perform 'A Christmas Carol' to our Year 10's and 11's.
This served as a very useful revision exercise for our KS4 pupils, as well as offering a welcome, creative aspect to their studies.

Best-selling author Sally Gardner
Thu 25 Nov 2021On Friday 3rd December we will be welcoming best-selling author Sally Gardner to St Gregory’s. She will speak to students in Years 7-9 about two of her best-selling books. Sally Gardner is the award-winning novelist who has sold over 2 million books in the UK and her work has been translated to more than 22 languages.
Her stories range from retellings of fairy stories for emerging readers, to the ‘Wings & Co’ series for younger junior age children, through to ‘I Coriander’ and ‘Maggot Moon’ for teenagers, for which she won the prestigious Carnegie Medal and the Costa Children’s Book Prize.
Her historical fiction novel for Young Adults, ‘I, Coriander’, won the Smarties Children’s Book Prize in 2005. Her action-packed French Revolution thriller ‘The Silver Blade’, sequel to ‘The Red Necklace’ (2007), was shortlisted for the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize in 2009. Actor Dominic West (‘The Wire’) has bought the film rights to both ‘The Red Necklace’ and ‘The Silver Blade’.
Sally Gardner continues to be an avid spokesperson for Dyslexia, working to change the way it is perceived by society. She is dyslexic and argues that it is not a disability, but a gift. Sally strongly believes that children should not be patronised. She is opposed to the limiting expectations set for children and thinks books must successfully challenge or inspire their remarkable intellects and imaginations.

Mr Ted Balmer (Former Mathematics Teacher)
Wed 24 Nov 2021It is with great sadness that the school received the news that Mr Ted Balmer, former Head of Mathematics at school has passed away peacefully.
Ted taught here back in the 1960s when the school was originally opened on its current site. Back then there was just Mr Balmer and Mrs Bishop as the Maths Department and as you may know, Mrs Bishop is still teaching with us. She says that Ted has his own chair in the staffroom, located where the school office now is and there was hell to pay if someone else sat there!
We offer our thoughts and prayers for Ted and his family.

Wed 17 Nov 202116x16 Reading Programme
Our English department has launched their very own '16 x 16' reading programme, in which all St Gregory's pupils read a minimum of 16 books, chosen by the English department, by the time they reach the age of 16. Here's what each year group have been reading:
Y7 - The Princess Bride
Y8 - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
Y9 - Misery
Y10 - Brick Lane
Thanks to the Art Department, a number of very talented Year 8s have produced posters to promote the project.
