  • Dr Eleni Bohacek visits St Gregory's

    Mon 25 Jul 2022

On Monday 11 July, Dr Eleni Bohacek visited St Gregory’s to talk about her work as a research fellow at the European Space Agency (ESA).

In her talk, aimed at encouraging girls into STEM, a group of students from Year 9 and 10 listened to Dr Bohacek explain how her work looks at the geology of Mars in order to understand the planet's history of climate change, liquid water and potentially life.

Showing pictures taken on the surface of the planet, she illustrated how research shows there would have been liquid water on the surface of Mars in the past, but that it is now completely inhospitable to human life. Dr Bohacek went on to explain that by studying Mars, lessons can be learnt that will help us to understand climate change on earth today.

The insightful and fascinating talk was well received by the interested students and Dr Bohacek encouraged the girls to keep following their interest in Science and STEM. She went on to explain that numerous opportunities are within their grasp and are all achievable with hard work, perseverance and resilience.

Dr Bohacek studied Earth Sciences at University College London (UCL) and completed her masters and PhD at the UCL-Cambridge Centre for Doctoral Training in Integrated Photonic and Electronic Systems. Her PhD thesis was about the stereo camera systems of the ExoMars 'Rosalind Franklin' Rover.

  • Karl Nova - Rapper

    Fri 15 Jul 2022

As part of our Multi-Cultural Week, on Wednesday 13 July, St Gregory’s welcomed author and rapper Karl Nova in to school.

Karl Nova is one of the UK's leading poets and hip hop artists who delivers his work in schools to inspire students about poetry, reading, writing and books and to develop their skills and enthusiasm.

Delivering his work in his own inspirational, witty and energetic style, Karl performed to all year groups throughout the morning. Born and raised in London, as well as Lagos, Karl always found it difficult to fit in as a child. This is reflected in his music which illustrates what it is like to be on the margins in a world where conformity seems to be the key in gaining acceptance.

Always keen to be one to defy expectations and go against the grain, Karl has also recently won the CLiPPA 2018 Award and one of the UK’s most prestigious literary awards, The Ruth Rendell Award 2020.

After his performances Karl held book signings for students. If any further students would like a signed copy of one of Karl’s books, they can be ordered directly from Karl via this link: http://www.karlnovaworld.com

The purpose of this is to enable students to understand the diversity of opportunities that are available to them after Year 13 - whether this be university, an apprenticeship, employment or a gap year. Our students spent the week gaining the information and skills they require to access their chosen pathway, so they may go on to ‘make the world a better place’ once they leave St Gregory’s.
