  • Year 13 Catholic Forum

    Mon 14 Mar 2022

On Monday 14th March, we were delighted to welcome back 'The Catholic Forum' as part of our Year 13 General RE lessons. The forum consists of a panel of Catholics, this year's panel included Fr Ed Tomlinson, Fr Ben Fadoju, Fr Peter Littleton, Jane Ireland our school Chaplain and Mrs Miller.

The panel sat at the front of the school Chapel and were asked a series of questions by our Year 13 students about the Catholic faith and teachings. Questions ranged from teachings on sexism and the inclusive nature of the Catholic Church.

Year 13 thoroughly enjoyed the forum, they listened carefully and engaged in thoughtful dialogue. The only piece of feedback we had from both the panel and the students is that it needed to be longer as we did not get through all the questions our inquisitive Year 13 students wanted answered, this is something we are looking into for future forums.

  • World Book Day 2022

    Mon 14 Mar 2022

On Thursday 3rd March, our students celebrated World Book Day.

For the first 5-10 minutes of morning lessons, period 1 – period 3, the teaching staff read a short story called 'The Signalman' by Charles Dickens. Then at 12.30pm students took part in DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) where they could read a book of their choice until the end of the lesson.

At lunchtime in the library, students took part in Quizzicle, a book quiz set for students to work in teams of five, with prizes for the winners.

Finally students took part in a competition called 'Guess The Bookworm', which involved looking at a poster made up of staff photographs reading their favourite/current book, covering part of the face or in disguise, enough for students to make a guess but not too much that it was obvious. Prizes were given out to the winning students.

Our year 7's particularly enjoyed this day and made a VLOG to record the memory.

  • Careers in Art

    Mon 14 Mar 2022

On Thursday 10 March, the Art department hosted a presentation on 'Careers in Art' led by David Young, course leader for the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at North Kent College.

The event provided a group of our Year 11 and 12 students with a valuable insight into the ambitious work of students from the College, and the careers they have explored beyond their qualifications. This was an informative session for all involved and it was inspiring to hear the stories of recent St Gregory’s Art students as well as their impressive successes in the world of Art & Design

  • Trinity Backstage Youth Theatre

    Tue 08 Mar 2022

One of our Year 11 students Will, has recently been working with the Trinity Backstage Youth Theatre.

This is what Trinity Youth Theatre told us 'Last week, Will was responsible for operating the lighting for Legally Blonde – a show with over 400 individual LX cues. He made it seem easy, keeping calm and relaxed and keeping everything to time. Last year, he also operated the sound for our production of Dracula: The Blood Truth. This is a multi-rolling comedy with seven actors, and timing is a huge part of it. Will did his role brilliantly, and his comic timing was excellent.

He has been really hard working, incredibly supportive of the younger members of the team, and a delight to be around. He is a star and a credit to St Gregory’s'.

Congratulations to Will. We are very proud of his determination and enthusiasm and wish him well for the future.

  • Sixth Form Tate Modern Trip

    Tue 08 Mar 2022

Our Sixth Form Art students enjoyed a visit to the Tate Modern on Monday 7 March, providing them a fantastic opportunity to research modern and contemporary artists to inspire their Personal Investigations.

It was a productive day for all and Mrs Vamplew, Subject Leader for Art & Design Technology, would like to thank the students for their hard work. The Art department looks forward to seeing the evidence of this experience in their diverse project outcomes.

  • Year 10 Trip to Tate Britain

    Mon 07 Mar 2022

The Year 10 Art students visited Tate Britain in our first gallery trip since lockdown.

They explored a diverse range of British Art ranging from Tudor times to the present day in search for inspiration for their 'Identity' project.

The students greatly benefitted from experiencing their chosen portraits at first hand.

We would like to thank Year 10 for their excellent response, they were superb ambassadors for our school.

  • Lions International Peace Poster Competition

    Tue 01 Mar 2022

President of Southborough & District Lions Club, Mrs Christine Forbes together with Mrs Bronnie Verrico visited St Gregory's Catholic School on 28 February 2022, to make a presentation to the winner of the Lions International Peace Poster Competition.

This competition encourages young people between the ages of 11 to 13 to think about peace, creatively express what it means to them and share their unique visions with the world. The theme of the contest this year is: "We Are All Connected".

This is the first year that Southborough & District Lions Club have sponsored a local school to participate and the winner, Olivia, won through District level stage and has now been entered in the National Competition which could reach International level. Olivia was presented with a shield and vouchers from the Club and from District and the school also benefited from a cheque for £100 for participating.

The two runners up, Elvy and Florrie also received vouchers. The shield and the awards were made possible thanks to the generosity of people donating in memory of Lion John Verrico who sadly passed away a year ago.

  • Keep Britain Tidy's Young Litter Hero of the Year Awards

    Tue 01 Mar 2022

You may have seen our post on Danny recently, one of our students who was invited to attend the Awards ceremony on 10th February for 'Keep Britain Tidy's Young Litter Hero of the Year Awards'.

Danny and his younger brother Jojo, had an amazing evening and were named overall winners, coming home with the award for being Keep Britain Tidy's Young Litter Heroes of the Year.

They were so thrilled and received a standing ovation when they collected the award. They also feature in the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean promotions and have promised to keep doing what they do!

But it doesn’t end here. On the 22nd February Danny and Jojo had another celebration. They were named district winners for Tonbridge of the KCC TryAngle Award for Community Action. They had already won this award in 2021, so were delighted to be recognised again, particularly because the nomination came from two people living in locally who appreciate all they do for their town.

Danny's always very keen to share what he's been up to, in the hope that it may inspire others to get involved or start up their own similar projects too. They are both very committed to their cause and although Danny will be quick to tell you that he doesn't do any of it for the rewards, they certainly do appreciate it when their hard work and positive attitudes are recognised!

A massive congratulations to both boys for a huge achievement and we wish them well in the future.
